Mid-layers – All you need to know

Spring’s must-have outdoor clothing, we look into what a mid-layer is, when you need to wear one, and inspire you with a few of our faves...

At ACAI we make a conscious effort to cut through all the technical jargon when it comes to talking about our performance wear.

We know that providing an inclusive space for our outdoor community goes beyond diverse sizing and free Outdoorsing events.

It’s not just about what we do and what we produce. But how we communicate.

That’s why we’re starting a new series of blogs which look at the vocabulary around your adventure wardrobe; exploring what these terms mean for the clothing you wear, when you should wear it, and how it will support your time spent in the outdoors.

This week, we’re diving straight into mid-layers...

What is a mid-layer?

When outdoor clothing companies use the term mid-layer, they are generally talking about fleeces.

A mid-layer is the central feature of the three-part layering system. That is a base layer worn closest to the skin that is made from a material that is soft, breathable and moisture-wicking; like bamboo. A mid-layer comes next and is there for warmth, to keep you cosy and provide insulation. Finally there are outer layer pieces which are worn in the outdoors to provide weather protection. Think showerproof hooded packaways; windproof, warm and full-length puffer coats; and fully waterproof ski-style jackets.

When should I wear mid-layers?

Mid-layers are a year-round must-have for your adventure wardrobe, but it’s this shoulder season that we’re in now where they really come into their own.

April is notoriously complex from a weather perspective here in the UK. Who else has been basking in temperatures easily hitting 20 degrees this week, yet having to scrape the ice off their car in the morning and popping a fleece over their seedlings?

It’s in these conditions where a mid-layer is ideal, giving you warmth when you need it. But also a breathable, adjustable option for when the mercury rises.

All-in-all, mid-layers are ideal outdoorwear for spring and autumn when you’re more likely to need to adjust your temperature, unlike in winter when you know you’ll need the additional warmth, and in the summer when basics will keep you cool.

What fabrics are best for a mid-layer?

In general when the outdoor clothing industry talks about a mid-layer the fabric they’re referring to is fleece.

That’s because fleece ticks all the boxes for a performance mid-layer, being insulating, breathable and fast drying.

Fleece is also really versatile, ranging from super-soft micro-fleece for cooler days, to cosy, thick Sherpa fleece for warmer walks. The material can also be comfortably lined to create a superb windproof barrier.

Other options for a great mid-layer include anything that contains merino wool, which enjoys similar fabric properties of insulation and breathability
as fleece.

What to consider when buying a mid-layer?

Fit – roominess is great for mid-layers, as it allows freedom of movement and space for base-layers underneath. So generally we’d recommend choosing an oversized fit – which is why ACAI mid-layers are sized generously.

Activity – if you’re hiking, then a mid-layer like our Gale Fleece is a great option, with its hood and zip protecting your face and head if the weather turns blustery or misty. If you’re camping, the Adventure Fleece is a must-have for throwing on over your pjs for your morning campfire cuppa. Or if you’re in the garden, a lighter option such as the Escape Fleece is a comfy pick.

Pockets – depending on what you’re wearing your mid-layer for, pockets can be essential. If you’re out hiking, a fleece with a kangaroo pocket will keep your precious items close. Side pockets are great for strolls in colder weather so you can keep your hands warm. Dog walking? Then any pocket in your mid-layer fleece will give you a handy place for dog treats and waste bags.

Zip – consider the zip-situation! If you want to adjust your temperature then a half-zip is a great way to easily do that. Or if you’re taking part in an outdoorsy activity which means you can’t take your mid-layer over your head without removing headwear, like cycling or horse riding, then a full-zip means you can cool yourself down quickly, either wearing your fleece open or taking it off altogether.

ACAI mid-layers roundup

At this time of year our mid-layers are a great choice teamed with our Encompass Bra or Boxy Tee underneath. But whenever you’re Outdoorsing, there’s an ACAI mid-layer to support your experience in the outdoors. Here are a few to add to your Adventure Wardrobe:

On The Go Fleece - Super cosy and made with plush Sherpa fleece, this is a great transitional mid-layer for when you’re, well, on the go! Our team has worn theirs in various conditions, from daily dog walks to chilled après ski, hiking mountains to keeping cosy on the school run. Our verdict? It’s a wardrobe must-have.

Gale Fleece - This windproof, hooded fleece with its kangaroo pocket really packs a punch in the outdoors. One of our team recently wore hers for hiking in the Peak District in March. Here’s what she had to say: “My Gale Fleece was brilliant for what ended up being a really mixed day of weather. We started off in super chilly, misty conditions, before being blasted by strong winds at the summit, and then rounding off the afternoon in glorious sunshine and warm temperatures. My Gale Fleece was brilliant to adjust my temperature and really protected me from the strong winds. So much so, that two of the women I was hiking with ordered one when they got home.”

Escape Fleece - This women’s fleece is just the thing to wear as a light layer on warmer days. It’s great value, and the roomy fit is excellent for moving in the outdoors. Cool yourself down with the zip on the neck, and pack it for summer camping trips, sunset strolls and dawn dog walks when you might need a loose-fit layer for a little warmth.

Adventure Fleece - Thick and cosy, fully-lined, a drawcord hem, ribbed cuffs, high neck, two-way chest pocket, a full zip, and a cool Oatmeal and Lilypad colourway. Phew! What’s not to love about our Adventure Fleece? The perfect mid-layer for your own adventuring in the outdoors.

We hope that’s given you a little more insight into the world of mid-layers! Don’t forget to follow our social pages and sign up to our newsletters for offers, new products, inspiration and all things Outdoorsing with ACAI.
