How to Care for Your Trousers

“Take care of things and they will take care of you” the saying goes. And when it comes to your outdoorwear, there’s a lot of truth in that statement.

At ACAI we want your adventure wardrobe to stand the test of time and perform for you in the outdoors, so you can wear it with confidence for years to come.

But part of ensuring the longevity and technical quality of your ACAI wear, is taking
good care of it.

So let’s explore... how to care for your outdoor trousers:

Why should I take care of my outdoor legwear?

In the same way you would reproof your waterproof coat or clean and care for your hiking boots, it’s a good idea to look after your outdoor trousers.

For starters, if you’ve made an investment in performance legwear, then you want to get the most value from that investment, which means taking care of it.

Here at ACAI we think about our impact on the planet. And creating clothing which lasts, and encouraging our customers to keep wearing it, ensures the life cycle of our products is longer.

Why reproof your trousers?

Did you know you can reproof your shower resistant and waterproof trousers in the same way you would a waterproof coat?

If you’ve bought one of our many showerproof or waterproof trousers
or leggings, reproofing them will maintain their water resistance and in turn keep you Outdoorsing in all conditions for longer.

Every time you choose to care and repair for your clothing over binning and replacing it, you’re making a choice that’s both better for the planet and your bank balance.

How do you reproof outdoor trousers?

At ACAI we recommend adding Grangers wash + repel liquid every three to five washes to maintain the fabric’s protection/DWR coating. You should then preferably air dry it beside a radiator, or on a low tumble drying temperature depending on the care label instructions.

Simply add two capfuls of Grangers to your washing machine drawer and job’s a goodun! As one of our customers said: “At last a waterproofing product that is easy to use and really works”.

What temperature should I wash my trousers at?

You should always clearly follow the instructions on the label for how to wash your outdoorwear, as this information will keep your kit at peak performance for the longest time.

Key points to remember are that: most outdoor clothing is best washed at 30C (unless it states otherwise); and you don’t need to wash your trousers all the time – try to make do with brushing off and airing to keep them cleaner and fresher for longer in between washing.

Care for your trousers on-the-go...

If you’re camping or travelling, you’re going to want to keep your outdoor trousers in good nick until you can get them into the washing machine.

So allow any mud to dry and then brush it off as you go. And at night, turn your legwear inside out and allow it to dry and air naturally on a hanger under cover if you can. If you’re travelling light, pack a couple of pegs and some thin rope for a makeshift clothesline.

Did you know that around 25% of a garment’s environmental impact happens after you receive it? That’s why we want to encourage you to care for your ACAI wear so it supports your adventures well into the future.
